In Ecuador, some country rich in biodiversity and natural resources, the incorporation of environmental education in the university curriculum not only responds to an urgent need to promote ecological awareness, but also aligns with international commitments related to sustainable development. In this context, this article aims to analyze environmental education in Ecuadorian universities, exploring its role in the training of responsible professionals and in promoting a culture of sustainability. To collect data regarding the perception of the state of environmental education in Higher Education institutions in Ecuador, a questionnaire with 16 aspects to be evaluated was used, applied to 25 UNIANDES professors, considered experts for their performance and experience in higher education. . It was found that there is a need to update content and methodologies so that they align with the current demands of the environment, as well as the implementation of initiatives between academia and society. The inclusion of this topic in humanities courses is necessary, as a complement to professional training. One option may be environmental education as part of specialization programs, which would reflect a commitment to sustainable development. It is imperative that Ecuadorian universities continue to strengthen and expand their initiatives in environmental education, overcoming institutional challenges and promoting collaboration between different disciplines and sectors.
