Preservation of cultural diversity in Ecuadorian education

Abstract

Intercultural bilingual education in Ecuador has emerged as a response to the need to preserve indigenous languages and cultures, by offering an alternative to the traditional approach focused on learning Spanish. Therefore, the objective of this research has been aimed at promoting and evaluating the effectiveness of this educational model, in order to improve the quality of learning and preserve linguistic and cultural diversity. To achieve this, a qualitative analysis has been used based on surveys of teachers and students, complemented by the review of curricular documents and educational policies. The results have shown substantial progress in promoting bilingualism and cultural inclusion in classrooms. However, challenges are still evident in terms of the availability of adequate teaching materials and the balance between the teaching of Spanish and indigenous languages. In conclusion, although the Bilingual Intercultural System Model has promoted linguistic and cultural preservation, it is necessary to strengthen pedagogical resources and adjust teaching approaches to achieve balanced development in both languages. Therefore, it is suggested to work on improving infrastructure and teaching support, as well as the implementation of strategies that guarantee inclusive and quality education for all students in intercultural contexts.
