Rank/rankl/opg education in orthodontics: need for continuous update
Abstract
The RANK/RANKL/OPG system plays a key role in bone remodeling, which is fundamental in orthodontic tooth movement. This study aims to assess orthodontists' current knowledge of this system in higher education programs and the need for continuous updating. The methodology included a literature review of scientific studies between 2015 and 2022, complemented by expert interviews. Twenty-five relevant articles were selected, highlighting the interaction of the system in bone remodeling during orthodontic treatment. The results indicate a lack of adequate inclusion of the RANK/RANKL/OPG system in orthodontic curricula, which may affect treatment efficacy. The conclusions highlight the need to integrate this knowledge into orthodontic education to improve clinical outcomes and prevent complications, such as root resorption and bone loss, thus promoting more effective and personalized treatments.
