Abstract

The curriculum is a very important tool for achieving optimal development of the teaching-learning process and ensuring educational quality; however, the Ecuadorian educational curriculum, in addition to having undergone several modifications in the last 10 years, presents certain weaknesses. Therefore, this study had an exploratory qualitative approach. Its purpose was to explore the shortcomings in the implementation of the curriculum corresponding to the upper basic general education level of the Ecuadorian educational system. The techniques and instruments used to collect the information consisted of a bibliographic review. The results showed that there are numerous shortcomings in each of the aspects that comprise the curriculum, such as the stated objectives, content, teaching strategies, assessment, resources, and the model implemented in pedagogical practice. It was concluded that Ecuadorian education faces multiple challenges in curriculum implementation. Although reforms attempt to modernize the system, structural and operational barriers persist that compromise its effectiveness.
