Bibliographic analysis of professor burnout using Vosviewer

Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify trends in the literature related to the development of burnout syndrome in professors. The methodology used was a descriptive bibliographic review in five phases: 1) objective formulation; 2) data and database identification; 3) data selection; 4) data confirmation; and 5) data analysis. The selected database was Scopus. A cluster analysis of articles on burnout syndrome in general and focused on university professors, published between 1990 and September 2025, was generated. A total of 14,249 articles and 201 articles, respectively, were identified. The results show that, followed by the term burnout, mental health and higher education are most frequently identified. Finally, The United States dominates scientific production in terms of published articles, showing Latin America at the beginning of scientific production related to burnout. This review provides guidance on the content of published articles, current topics of interest, and future trends in burnout research.
