Abstract

The increasing use of ChatGPT in education has sparked debates about its implications for teaching and learning. This article aims to present an overview of the central debates and reflections and the tensions and issues associated with ChatGPT in the educational field. Using the PRISMA guidelines, a search and selection of articles reporting the use of ChatGPT in the Web of Science database were conducted in December 2023. The JBI verification instrument was implemented to analyze the articles. The results indicate that most of the analyzed articles report intervention-type research, with the most common application area being engineering and computer science, primarily qualitative research, and the most frequent use of ChatGPT as a support tool. The conclusions present a series of identified themes, including academic integrity and the originality of student work, ethics, and plagiarism, reflecting on the roles it should have in education, bias, and inclusion.
