Abstract

Higher education institutions in Latin America are endeavouring to enhance academic processes with a view to achieving quality teaching. It is imperative to concentrate on the risk factors that have the potential to compromise the quality of education during students' university experience. The objective of this research is to identify potential academic risk factors faced by students at the PUCE Esmeraldas campus in Ecuador, considering variables that may influence their academic progress. The Student Course Experience Questionnaire and the Study Approaches Inventory were utilised in the study. The data were analysed using a range of descriptive and inferential techniques, including difference analysis, correlation, and structural equation modelling. The primary findings suggest that upper-level students and nursing students may be susceptible to academic challenges. These students have been observed to demonstrate a profound commitment to academic rigour. It is important to note that students from low socioeconomic backgrounds may encounter factors that have the potential to influence their academic performance.
