Abstract

The digitization of publication environments has made it possible to overcome limits to the benefit of scientific production. However, visibility and citation rates are not in line with scientific publication indicators. Researchers must do complementary work to improve these metrics. The objective is to identify the perceived use of horizontal social networks by researchers in the dissemination and visibility of their scientific articles. In addition, the aim is to recognize possible relationships between the generations of researchers with the use of these platforms. This descriptive qualitative-quantitative study analyzes the research groups of two faculties of the Universidad Técnica del Norte, Ecuador, and their members, through surveys and interviews with their coordinators, with a sample of 17 research groups and 56 teacher-researchers. The results indicate that 90% of the groups do not use horizontal social networks and that 100% do not manage them in a planned manner due to lack of knowledge, lack of time, resources and adequate protocols. Generational differences are not obstacles to incorporating these outreach strategies, but there is a direct relationship with specific constraints that affect the implementation of these strategies. In conclusion, the findings reveal the need to integrate social network management strategies in the academic environment, taking advantage of the interest in the consumption of this type of content by this target group, encouraging the connection and generation of academic networks and groups with common interests.
