Abstract

Introduction. Tutoring in higher education contributes to the comprehensive training of students, especially in health careers. The objective of the study is to describe the perceptions of the teachers in charge of this work in the obstetrics school of a Peruvian national university. Methods. The methodological design was qualitative with a descriptive approach, in which an in-depth interview was applied to a group of seven teachers selected through convenience sampling who fulfilled the role of tutor during the 2022 academic year. The results show the need to a more precise distribution of the functions of the headquarters and personalized tutors, with the former falling on the academic and organizational functions, while the latter must assume to a greater extent the support in research and the identification of problems of type non-academic in the inmates. Furthermore, the need for tutors to develop strategies to fulfill these functions that guarantee joint work for the benefit of inmates is highlighted, and that include induction, surveillance and virtual monitoring activities, and periodic information and coordination meetings between the tutors. It is concluded that the work of the tutors in the boarding school favors the comprehensive development of the students, for which a distribution of functions and the joint work of the headquarters tutor and the personalized tutor is necessary.
