Research competence for studying the local history: importance in Cuban medical education

The development of research competencies is a necessity in contemporary higher education and the teaching of local history provides useful resources for it development. The objective of this article is to explain the importance of developing research competencies for the study of local history in Cuban medical education. It was carried out an exploratory systematic review to systematize the academic results published between the years 2019 to 2024, for which a model was designed based on the PRISMA 2020 Declaration that determined the selection of 32 scientific publications, which served as the basis for carrying out a content analysis. It was observed that specialized literature recognizes the value of developing investigative competencies, and the utility of the local history for improve the teaching of this discipline. However, the proposal base on competencies for history and the teaching experiences on this regard, are in a processes of construction and development. It was proposed a concept of research competencies for the study of local history which essential is the reconstruction of the local past with the historical methodological tool based on axiological dimension. It was noted the need for medical science students to have tools to study the local area based on their graduate profile for social and family medicine. It is concluded that this approach is important because it contributes to improving the professional and scientific training of future health professionals
