Video Games and Child Development: A Critical Analysis of Digital Play Between Risks, Opportunities, and Educational Mediation

Introduction. Play is deeply embedded in human development from childhood. Play activities have undergone a progressive shift towards digital formats, such as video games, which raise concerns regarding child development. Development. Digital games enable novel forms of interaction; however, they should not cause apprehension regarding the advancement of traditional play. This phenomenon demonstrates the cultural transformation that modern childhoods are part of due to their constant contact with technology. The role of the family is essential in guiding children towards a comprehensive understanding of play and in monitoring interaction times. Conclusions. Diverse discourses exist concerning resistance to the use of video games. Nonetheless, it is imperative that society, families, and educators develop a more comprehensive understanding of their educational and formative potential.
