Abstract

Globalization and competitiveness demand that today's society build relationships based on empathy to foster trust, respect, solidarity, values, and socio-emotional skills. For this reason, this study addresses empathy as the foundation of healthy interpersonal relationships in the rural community of La Macarena, Los Ríos province. The research aims to analyze the contribution of empathy to building healthy interpersonal relationships among the community's residents. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive design, interviews were conducted with 120 residents, selected by convenience sampling. The information obtained was processed through thematic analysis, which identified patterns related to empathy such as active listening, emotional control, motivation, conflict resolution, and acceptance of diverse thought. The results demonstrated that empathy fosters active listening, assertive communication, and mutual understanding in the studied community. This, in turn, allows its members to understand and accept diverse ways of thinking, bringing them closer together through emotionally controlled relationships that lead to better conflict resolution and increased motivation to maintain healthy social relationships based on respect, mutual support, and cooperation. It is concluded that empathy is an essential tool for sustaining social bonds, promoting community cohesion, and preventing conflicts. Its practice stimulates more humane, conscious, and healthy relationships, and significantly influences the sense of belonging, social cohesion, and well-being in the La Macarena community.
