Cuban higher education is a strategic pillar for generating knowledge and innovation, integrating teaching and research with socio-economic sectors. Within this framework, student scientific activity emerges as an essential component for sustainable development. To evaluate this component in the specific context of the University of Matanzas, the research objective is to analyse the behaviour of indicators related to student scientific activity during the period from 2019 to the first semester of 2024. A descriptive statistical study was conducted that examined indicators such as the number of scientific groups, the number of students in scientific groups, the number of students participating in research projects, and the number of student awards. The results showed that between 2019 and the first semester of 2024, the institution demonstrated solid growth with 58 scientific groups and 1,461 students enrolled, aligned with the seven lines of research, with Social Studies and Public Management standing out. Student participation in scientific projects reached 71%. Among the student awards, six national CITMA Student Researcher awards and awards in agricultural and computer forums stand out. Most of the projects were associated with national and regional programmes. The University of Matanzas consolidated a model of excellence by integrating scientific research into student training. As part of its continuous improvement, the institution continues to work to strengthen its international projection and links with the productive sector, highlighting the key role of student research as a driver of sustainable development in Cuba.
