Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence in universities has transformed teaching, research, and social engagement by improving the efficiency, personalization, and reach of academic processes. However, its implementation demands a responsible and sustainable perspective within the education sector. For this reason, this study examined the influence of artificial intelligence on the transformation of UNIANDES's substantive functions, identifying opportunities to optimize teaching, research, and social engagement in an ethical and sustainable manner. To this end, a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach was used with coding, comparison, and triangulation, organizing the findings into a matrix that gives the research process a comprehensive categorical structure. Four main categories were identified, including transformation and complementarity, a renewing element of teaching, a tool that enhances research, and an instrument for expanding social engagement. In fact, it was observed that artificial intelligence enabled personalized learning, optimized resources, and facilitated interdisciplinary collaboration. It also improved the planning and evaluation of community projects, strengthening university-community interaction. It has been concluded that artificial intelligence has emerged as a strategic ally that enhances the efficiency, innovation, and relevance of substantive university functions. Consequently, its responsible integration has promoted more equitable and sustainable academic processes. Therefore, it has been recommended to strengthen training, active participation, and an ethical approach that guarantees the complementarity between technology and human capital at the university.
