The aim of this study was to analyze the importance of communication skills in the quality of training of second-level students in the Medicine program at Uniandes University, based on student perceptions, a systematic review of the literature, and the application of methodological tools aimed at pedagogical improvement. A mixed-methods, descriptive, cross-sectional research design was implemented, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches. A bibliographic review was conducted in recognized scientific databases, and a structured survey was administered to a sample of 126 students, validated through expert judgment and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed a positive valuation of communication as an essential component of medical practice; however, a gap was identified between the importance attributed to these competencies and the perceived level of preparation. Greater proficiency was observed in skills related to active listening, empathy, and clarity of expression, while limitations were detected in conflict resolution, negotiation, and emotional management. The application of the Pareto method enabled the prioritization of the most relevant training strategies, highlighting supervised clinical practice and practical workshops as the alternatives with the greatest impact. It was concluded that the systematic strengthening of communication skills is indispensable for improving the quality of medical education, and the transversal incorporation of active methodologies and supervised practical experiences is recommended.
