Effects of emotional intelligence on academic performance of university students

The objective was to determine the effects of emotional intelligence on the academic performance of Peruvian university students. The methods included a quantitative, descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional approach. The population was 448 industrial engineering students from a public university in Metropolitan Lima. The sample consisted of 97 students from the 8th and 9th cycle of the degree. The data Emotional intelligence was assessed using two instruments, the Emotional Intelligence Inventory and the Trait-Meta Mood Scale, in order to analyze the intrapersonal, interpersonal, adaptability, stress management, mood, emotional perception, understanding of feelings, and emotional regulation components, while academic performance was analyzed with the grade point average. The study was conducted during the second semester of 2024. The results obtained affirm that emotional intelligence and its dimensions have no effect on the academic performance of university students, such that no significant relationships are found between the intrapersonal, interpersonal, adaptability, stress management, mood, emotional perception, understanding of feelings and emotional regulation components, with academic performance.
